Note to Applicants: Please make sure to contact your recommenders before submitting your fellowship application. All materials, including recommendations, are required to be submitted before the stated application deadline to be considered for funding.

Several fellowship opportunities are available through the Graduate School for students enrolled and seeking a degree in one of our many graduate departments.  These fellowships each have different purposes and eligibility criteria, so you will want to read through the information below carefully.

For fellowships that include a tuition scholarship, the standard graduate tuition and all mandatory fees are covered. They do not include student specific fees, such as lab fees, course fees, program fees, music fees, distance learning course fees, or tuition charges above and beyond the standard graduate rate.

Students who are awarded a fellowship should be aware that fellowship stipends (as well as any tuition scholarships that accompany fellowships) will affect eligibility for state and federal financial aid funds, see: https://www.uky.edu/financialaid/overaward-policy . Students who expect to receive financial aid should contact their financial aid counselor to find out what impact a fellowship award will have on an aid package before accepting the fellowship. Persons having UK employment of 0.75 FTE or higher (considered a full time UK employee), whether it is from one payroll assignment or total combined assignments, are not eligible for Graduate School Fellowship or for Assistantships. The Graduate School reserves the right to rescind any fellowship award if the awardee is found to have 0.75 FTE or higher employment at UK at any time during the award period.

If your department has a student who is currently being supported by one of the Graduate School Fellowships listed below and plan to also have the same student serve as a Teaching, Research, or Graduate Assistant, please fill out the following Overload Request form for approval. DO NOT enter the requested overload assignment, or the fellowship, in the GSAS system. The Overload Request form will need to be completed each semester and must receive full approval before the student can begin their overload assignment responsibilities.

Send questions to the Funding Office at grad.fellowships@uky.edu or call 859-257-9684.

Amount: Academic year (Fall-Spring) stipend of $20,000 (PhD) or $10,000 (Masters), plus a standard graduate tuition scholarship (does not cover all course, lab, instrument and distance learning fees). Student health plan enrollment is provided for all recipients.

Lyman T. Johnson was the first Black student to enroll as a graduate student at the University of Kentucky in 1949 after a successful legal challenge. He embodied a courage in pursuit of scholarship and development that continues to inspire all who work and study at UK. In his honor, the Lyman T. Johnson (LTJ) Fellowship is available for students entering one of the many programs at the University of Kentucky Graduate School. Applicants must describe, in an essay, how their pursuit of graduate education reflects the values of the fellowship's namesake. The application must be accompanied by the support of the program's Director of Graduate Studies. Awards are highly competitive, as we receive many more applications than can be funded each year.

You can find a more in-depth biography about Lyman T. Johnson and his legacy here: https://www.ukalumni.net/s/lyman-t-johnson

PhD students who receive an LTJ Fellowship are eligible to apply for a second year of funding for completion of the dissertation. An application is required, and recipients must have maintained a minimum 3.2 GPA, be making good progress toward their degree and have participated in appropriate professional development activities. An LTJ recipient may apply in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year (for year 4, 5, or 6). Students are expected to complete their dissertation in the fellowship year, and so will ordinarily not receive any subsequent support.

Masters students are eligible for one year of support only.

Criteria for Eligibility:

Applications will be evaluated based on holistic, individualized assessment of each applicant, including:

  • The applicant's response to the essay prompt
  • Leadership experience, extracurricular activities, awards and recognition, and/or community service, as evidenced in the applicant's c.v. or other materials
  • Academic preparation and promise
  • Letters of recommendation

Max Steckler Fellowship

Thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Max Steckler, seven graduate programs have funding available for doctoral students selected by their program. The programs are: Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Business Administration, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, and Physics. Please contact the DGS of one of these programs for more information.

The Kentucky Graduate Internship Scholarship

Summer support for a doctoral student in an unpaid or underpaid internship in a career direction that is related to their research but is not within academia, nor in the field that is a typical career outcome for that degree program. The student is responsible for seeking, securing, and arranging the internship opportunity, with initial guidance from the Stuckert Career Center. See further details below.

Examples:

  • A Political Science student wants to apply their knowledge of a critical issue to work in a government agency focused on that problem.
  • A Psychology student wants to see if HR work is the career direction that fits their interests and skills.
  • A Communications student is interested in helping an NGO develop campaign strategies.
  • A Plant and Soil Sciences student wants to explore work on regional environmental issues.

Eligibility: Doctoral students (PhD, EdD, DMA) who have passed their qualifying exams and have completed no less than three years, and no more than six, towards the degree. Applications from advanced MFA students will also be considered.

Internships should be external to UK, should be at least partially in-person, and should range in duration from 6 to12 weeks (typically in the range of 20 hours per week), working with a company or organization operating within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Student support amount of up to $5,000 total will depend on internship duration, overall time commitment to internship, and amount (if any) of compensation from the internship site. Amount and disbursement schedule will be determined by The Graduate School and stated in the award letter and internship agreement.

Students should start by setting up an internship consultation appointment with Dr. Abbie Wood via the Stuckert Career Center's platform Handshake (directions are here). Making use of Graduate School programs such as ImaginePhD and Beyond the Professoriate will also foster readiness to pursue an internship opportunity. In addition to the Stuckert Career Center, sources of guidance also include faculty in the student's discipline and the Graduate School’s Office of Graduate Student Professional Enhancement (contact morris.grubbs@uky.edu).

APPLY HERE. Be sure to have the three documents listed below ready for upload. Application portal will remain open until May 15, 2024, with reviews beginning April 15. (See below for rolling application timeline.)

Required documents to upload are the following:

  • An essay (2 to 4 pages, double-spaced) explaining how the work relates to the applicant's degree and aligns with their career interests.
  • A letter from the internship supervisor explaining the duties.
  • A letter from the DGS that affirms the student's good standing in the program; the DGS should also indicate the professional enhancement activities that the applicant has engaged in.

Students selected will complete an internship agreement, kept on file in their program and in the Graduate School. Recipients will be required to submit two reports--one midway through the internship, and one upon completion--discussing the work and describing how it has helped them develop new skills and career-relevant experiences.

Application Timeline: Application review will begin April 15, 2024. Applicants who have submitted by April 15 and are deemed eligible for full consideration will be notified by April 22 to arrange an interview. Applications will be considered earlier than April 15 only as necessary (i.e. if internship supervisor requires and requests an earlier decision; requests should be made by the supervisor to morris.grubbs@uky.edu with the subject KGIS Early Decision Request). Applications submitted after April 15 and before May 15 will be fully considered and candidates will be contacted the week of May 20.
