Applications for The Grad Degree+ Pedagogy Development Track for the 2020-2021 academic year are now open. This year’s track focuses on “Student Engagement in Online Learning.” Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars accepted into the pedagogy track for this academic year will explore pedagogical practices of engaging students in online environments, both synchronously and asynchronously. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe instructors who apply effective methods of student engagement in their own virtual classrooms and online courses. Cohort participants will take a deep dive into strategies of synchronous engagement during the fall semester and asynchronous strategies in the spring semester.
Through a series of workshops, discussions, and observations, participants will experience the intersecting relationship between student engagement, connection, and academic success. The workshop component of this year’s series will occur once a month via Zoom. A virtual classroom observation component will allow participants to see specific pedagogies at work in their own disciplines or in a related discipline. At the end of the observation participants will submit a 2-3 page reflection that offers a critical look at the instructor’s pedagogical approach to student engagement with a particular consideration on how the observed methods, or a similar approach, could apply to your current or future teaching in the virtual environment.
Once the requirements are met, participants will receive a professional development certificate in “Student Engagement in Online Learning” from The Graduate School and the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT).
