Orientation for New Graduate Teaching Assistants
Dr. Kathi Kern keynotes the University-wide Orientation.
Mandatory orientations for new Teaching Assistants are held every August and January.
Graduate School tuition funding is contingent upon your completion of all TA Orientation requirements within the first semester of your teaching assistantship. Should you not complete all requirements by the end of your second semester, you may not continue as a TA.
TA ORIENTATION REQUIREMENTS ARE:
University-wide TA Orientation including all portions of Microteach and Plenary
International TA Orientation (required for TAs new to higher education in the United States)
Language Screening (required for TAs whose first language is not English)

Fall 2021 University-wide TA Orientation
Due to continuing COVID-19 uncertainties, the Graduate School is hosting the university-wide TA Orientation activities in hybrid formats. Much of the content will be delivered in asynchronous modules in Canvas; other more interactive content will be delivered in person at the times mentioned below.
New International Graduate Student (in partnership with the International Center) and New International TA Orientation
For all new international graduate students/TAs at the university
Online via Canvas with the following in person-components:
New International Graduate Student Orientation on Monday, August 9, 2021 from 9:00am-12:00pm
ITA Orientation on Monday, August 9, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Non-ITA Orientation TBD
Completion of all mandatory online modules and in-person events prior to the first day of class is required for all new International TAs, and attendance will be recorded for EACH component individually.
University-wide TA Orientation
Required for all new TAs at the university
Online via Canvas with the following in-person components:
Tuesday, August 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

TA Language Screenings
Required for all TAs whose primary language is not English. Details about the Language Screenings can be found at this link.

The Graduate School will arrange the screening times with your department and notify you prior to the screening date. The language screenings last a half-hour, and the appointment will be set with your department, so we ask you to clear your schedule for the entire day until we notify you of your appointment slot.
