Orientation for New Graduate Teaching Assistants

Mandatory orientations for new Teaching Assistants are held every August and January.

Graduate School tuition funding is contingent upon your completion of all TA Orientation requirements within the first semester of your teaching assistantship. Should you not complete all requirements by the end of your second semester, you may not continue as a TA.

University-wide TA Orientation including all portions of Microteach and Plenary
International TA Orientation (required for TAs new to higher education in the United States)

Fall 2020 University-wide TA Orientation

In response to the COVID-19 uncertainties ahead and in order to be as flexible as possible for students returning to campus or arriving to campus for the first time, the Graduate School is moving the various university-wide orientations to online formats.  Much of the content will be delivered in asynchronous modules in Canvas; other more interactive content (including panel discussions and microteaching) will be delivered synchronously via Zoom at the times mentioned below. Please note that the dates below have been updated as of 6/19/20 to accomodate the university's revised academic calendar.

New International Graduate Student (in partnership with the International Center) and New International TA Orientation
All modules will be available on Canvas beginning August 3rd, followed in the subsequent two weeks by multiple optional question-and-answer sessions (dates to be determined).
Completion of all mandatory online modules prior to the first day of class is required for all new International TAs, and attendance will be recorded for EACH required module individually.

University-wide TA Orientation
A welcome module and several topical modules will be available on Canvas beginning August 3rd, followed by the two synchronous sessions listed below as well as multiple optional Q&A sessions (dates TBD) throughout the following weeks.
Microteaching Sessions: Thursday, August 6th: 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. via Zoom (links will be provided on Canvas)
and Friday, August 7th: 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. via Zoom (links will be provided on Canvas)
Completion of all modules prior to the first day of class is required for all new TAs, and attendance is required at each Microteaching Session.

TA Language Screenings
Monday, August 10th via Zoom (by appointments pre-arranged with the department beginning at 9:00 a.m.).
All Teaching Assistants whose native or primary language is not English are required to participate in language screenings. Details about the Language Screenings can be found at this link.
The Graduate School will arrange the screening times with your department and notify you prior to the screening date.
