Orientation for New Graduate Teaching Assistants
Dr. Joe McGillis, Academic Ombud, welcomes new TAs at the University-wide Orientation
Mandatory orientations for new Teaching Assistants are held every August and January.
Graduate School tuition funding is contingent upon your completion of all TA Orientation requirements* within the first semester of your teaching assistantship. Should you not complete all requirements by the end of your second semester, you may not continue as a TA.
Departments are responsible for registering their new TAs for these events. Please contact your DGS to ensure you have been registered.

Spring 2020 University-wide TA Orientation
University-wide TA Orientation: Thursday and Friday, January 9th and 10th, 2020 (8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.) in Whitehall Classroom Building, room 106. All newly appointed domestic and international TAs are required to complete the two-day orientation as part of their employment contracts. The orientation includes small-group sessions on modes of teaching as well as plenary sessions on institutional policies and campus resources. We take attendance at each of these sessions, and TAs are required to attend them all.
International TA Orientation: Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 (1:00 p.m. until 5:00pm) in Gatton Student Center, room 330AB. This orientation is for all new TAs who are classified as international and are new to the higher-education classroom in the United States. (Note: New International Graduate Student Orientation, required for all new international graduate students regardless of whether they will be TAs or not, will take place from 8:30am-12:00pm on this day as well.)
International TA Language Screenings: Monday, January 13th, 2020 (by pre-arranged appointments beginning at 8:30 a.m.). All Teaching Assistants whose native or primary language is not English are required to participate in language screenings. Details about the Language Screenings can be found at this link. Note that interviews have been added to the screening procedures. These interviews will likely replace the reading passage in Fall 2020, but in January 2020, they are being run as a pilot and will not impact a student's score. Times and locations of screenings are arranged by The Graduate School with the TA's department.
