GSAS Summer Information

During the summer, students working as research assistants or graduate assistants will receive a tuition scholarship for the out-of-state portion of tuition only.  Full time assistantships (20 hours per week) will receive a tuition scholarship coving their full out-of-state portion of tuition and half time assistantships (10 hours per week) will receive a tuition scholarship covering half their out-of-state portion of tuition.

  • Scholarships covering the in-state portion of tuition are not available during the summer from the Graduate School.
  • We do not perform an in-state tuition recharge during the summer. The in-state portion of tuition is the responsibility of the student or hiring department.

Summer teaching assistantships should be handled by the hiring department and students who have a fellowship should refer to their award letter for information regarding whether or not summer tuition is included as the Graduate School does not provide any tuition scholarships to teaching assistants during the summer.

RAs and GAs who will not be enrolled in classes during the summer do not need a GSAS form submitted for them however a GSAS can be submitted for the summer session to be consistent with offer letters or tracking purposes.

If a student is working an assistantship during the summer, they must follow AR 5:2 and the 20 hours a week rule. The max a student with an assistantship can work is 28 hours a week, an additional 8 hours, with an approved work overload request form.

If students are not working as an assistant during the summer, departments could hire them as a student non-work study or STEPS employee. This allows students to work up to 40 hours a week during the summer.

Please remember that students must accept the GSAS form by a certain date each semester.

If the funds are received in error, the student WILL be responsible for paying them back.

Tuition Scholarships

• The tuition scholarship only cover the out-of-state portion of the “Standard Graduate Tuition Rate” during the summer for research assistants and graduate assistants.

• In-state tuition scholarships from the Graduate School are not available during the summer however programs may provide in-state tuition scholarships during the summer.

• The fee amounts can change with changes in enrollment or other factors outside the control of the Graduate School.

• If a student is enrolled in any program whose tuition rate is higher than the “Standard Graduate Tuition Rate”, the student will be responsible for the difference in cost.

• The tuition scholarship does NOT cover courses taken with an audit (AU) or as a pass/fail grade type . If a student is enrolled in any such courses, they will be responsible for the tuition and associated fees.
