Career Workshops Help Graduate Students Prepare for Meaningful Career Paths

LEXINGTON, Ky. (October 2025) — The University of Kentucky Stuckert Career Center is helping graduate students take the next step in their professional development through a series of fall workshops designed specifically for master’s and doctoral students.

Each session focuses on helping graduate students explore career options, understand hiring trends, and learn how to translate their academic experiences into competitive skills for the workplace.

Exploring Career Paths for Graduate Students

The Stuckert Career Center’s “Exploring Career Paths for Graduate Students” workshop series offers opportunities for students to gain clarity and direction in their professional goals. Each session, led by career advisor Abbie Wood, provides practical guidance and resources tailored to the graduate student experience.

Wood’s approach emphasizes preparation and self-awareness, encouraging students to identify how their research, teaching, and leadership experiences connect to careers both inside and outside of academia.

October 15 at 12:00 PM (Online): How to Build a LinkedIn Profile for an Industry Job Search
Students will learn how to craft an effective LinkedIn profile, build professional connections, and showcase their research and skills to potential employers.

October 15 at 2:00 PM (Online): Why Recruiters Are Ignoring You
This workshop focuses on the hiring process from a recruiter’s perspective. Students will learn how to make their résumés, cover letters, and profiles stand out.

These online sessions are hosted in partnership with Beyond the Professoriate and Beyond Graduate School, both designed to support graduate students as they prepare for industry and nonacademic careers.

October 16 at 11:00 AM (Zoom): When the Unexpected Occurs: Strategies for Navigating Classroom Challenges
Designed for graduate instructors and teaching assistants, this workshop provides strategies to manage classroom challenges effectively and maintain positive learning environments.

October 16 at 3:00 PM (Stuckert Career Center): Building Skills as a Graduate Student
Students can explore how to strengthen key professional skills, including leadership, communication, and adaptability, that are valued in both academic and nonacademic careers.

October 22 at 1:00 PM (Zoom): Introduction to Consulting Careers
This session introduces graduate students to the consulting industry and provides insight into how analytical and communication skills developed in graduate school can be applied to solving real-world business problems.
