Nominations due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 15

Directors of Graduate Studies and graduate faculty may submit nominations for known students or may encourage students to self-nominate  (past or continuing students). Students are eligible if their thesis (or project) was accepted in partial fulfillment of master’s degree requirements between Fall 2023 and Summer 2025.

Call for Nominations: Outstanding Master’s Thesis Awards

The Conference of Southern Graduate Schools (CSGS) is now accepting nominations for Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award the in each of the following categories:  

  • Social Sciences, Business and Education (1 award) 
  • Life Sciences (1 award)  
  • Non-traditional Thesis / Project Award (1 award) 

The thesis (or project) must have been accepted in partial fulfillment of master’s degree requirements between Fall 2023 and Summer 2025. Full details about eligibility, nomination materials, the selection criteria, and prizes — are available on the CSGS Awards webpage.   

The University of Kentucky Graduate School may submit one nomination per category to the competition.  To determine UK’s nominees, the Graduate School will conduct an internal review process, with nomination materials due by 5 p.m. on October 15. to gsdean@uky.edu.  Directors of Graduate Studies and graduate faculty are encouraged to submit nominations for known students (past or continuing).

Eligibility

Students are eligible if their thesis (or project) was accepted in partial fulfillment of master’s degree requirements between Fall 2023 and Summer 2025. 

The Graduate School will provide certification confirming: 
  • The thesis was approved as part of the student’s degree requirements.
  • The student completed the degree during the eligible period. 
Nomination Materials 
  • A synopsis of the thesis (500 word maximum) outlining its context within the broader field, as well as how the completed research contributes to the discipline; prepared by the nominee;
  • An abbreviated resume or CV for the nominee (2 page maximum, prepared by the nominee);
  • A web link to the thesis or an electronic copy submitted by e-mail;
  • A letter of support/endorsement from the major professor focused on the criteria by which the committee will evaluate the submitted theses. These consist of: clarity of style and presentation, scholarship, research methodology, and contributions to the field or discipline; and
  • Certification by the Graduate Dean or designee that the thesis was approved in partial fulfillment of requirements for the master’s degree and that the student completed the master’s degree within the past two academic years and/or summer sessions. 

Materials must be compiled as a single PDF and named as follows: ThesisAward_Category_LastName_FirstName_Institution.pdf   
Note: Nominations that do not adhere strictly to these instructions will not be considered

Timeline
Oct. 15      – All materials submitted to gsdean@uky.edu by 5 p.m. 
Oct. 15-29 – Committee review and recommendations 
Oct. 30      – Nominees notified 
Nov. 3        – Nominees submitted by the Graduate School to SCGS
