Urgent Message from ISSS Regarding Travel

International Center

International Student & Scholar Services

Dear International Students and Scholars,

We have just learned that the US Department of State has today announced a Level 4 Travel Advisory. We are writing to you because this unprecedented US government action is likely to have a major impact on International air travel in and out of the US. In fact, as the Department of State notes, “Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. Airlines have cancelled many international flights...” . Things are changing very fast and with reduced international air travel by US citizens on some international routes, those routes may be discontinued by the airlines . It is very difficult to know how long any changes in air travel may last. It could take a long while for regular international air traffic to resume. You may wish to read this article entitled, “You’re Grounded: The COVID-19 Effect on Global Flight Capacity”. Students who stay here in the US may find themselves unable to travel back to their home countries, and those who travel outside the US may find themselves unable to return due to these major disruptions in air traffic patterns.

Secondly, U.S. Embassies world-wide are now suspending visa services. Visit the U.S. Department of State website for up-to-date information on visa services in your home country.. We don’t know how long this will last but reports are showing that some countries are suspending services through fall 2020.

For these reasons, we want to urge you to reevaluate your plans in light of this information. Due to the changing nature of likely air travel disruptions, possible delays obtaining US immigration documents, and proliferating travel restrictions globally, all nonimmigrants are being advised to monitor government news sources in their home country and speak with their individual sponsoring agencies, partnering universities, or exchange partners, to keep informed.

A note regarding housing: as you know, International undergraduate students who live on campus and would like to remain on campus should complete this form. International graduate students and scholars living in Graduate and Family Housing are able to remain living on campus.

We understand that making decisions in this environment is difficult. ISSS will continue work with you on any immediate needs and we are here for any upcoming concerns you may have. Please be in touch with us at isss@uky.edu. You can also arrange for zoom conversations with individual staff members. We are here to support you during this ever changing and challenging time.
