New URM Incoming Student Orientation (Ubuntu)

Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term meaning “humanity”. It is often translated as “I am because we are,” or “humanity towards others”, but is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”. Ubuntu asserts that society gives human beings their humanity. In that spirit, The Center for Graduate and Professional Diversity Initiatives, along with The Graduate School’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, offers a graduate and professional students’ orientation for historically marginalized students. Ubuntu: Graduate Student Orientation, is an annual convocation and orientation program created to assist graduate and professional students of color in making the transition to life at the University of Kentucky.
